The Director of Engineering is a key member of the hotel's senior leadership team, responsible for the efficient operation of the hotel property and all its equipment, ancillary maintenance and repair services, and protection of the owner's assets. This role encompasses all structural aspects of the hotel as well as the maintenance of grounds and external facilities. Beyond operational excellence, the Director of Engineering serves as the steward of the hotel's environmental sustainability agenda, driving energy conservation initiatives and measurable performance improvements.
- Financial Returns & Budget Management
• Participate in the preparation of the annual departmental operating budget and financial plans
• Monitor budget and control expenses with a focus on energy management, preventive maintenance, and capital planning
• Lead hotel renovations and other projects; negotiate contracts and ensure timely completion of projects within budget
• Establish maintenance budgets, capital works programs, and engineering plans; regularly monitor and review performance against these targets
• Manage the Capital Plan by setting realistic capital budgets, cash flows, and equity asset plans
• Provide advice to senior management on all aspects of engineering support, environmental controls, and operational efficiency
• Plan, implement, and administer energy management programs by establishing energy reduction objectives, maintaining records, and regularly reporting performance
- Operations & Asset Protection
• Oversee the physical operations of the hotel, including maintenance and repair; order parts and supplies in a timely and efficient manner while minimizing waste and maintaining "green" initiatives
• Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance plans for all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and building systems
• Ensure the effective operation of all mechanical and electrical systems and equipment through a comprehensive preventative maintenance program
• Closely monitor the condition of the physical property and equipment through continual inspections of the building
• Manage life safety installations, maintenance, and periodic testing/inspections to ensure full compliance at all times
• Ensure adherence to all statutory regulations and fire codes by regularly reviewing policies and safety procedures
• May be responsible for hotel security to minimize risk of theft, crime, and other hazards
- Guest Experience
• Respond in a courteous and prompt manner to all guest questions, complaints, and/or requests to ensure a high level of guest satisfaction
• Carry out preventive maintenance programs to ensure the facility is maintained and in service for our guests
• Ensure technical support services quickly address, and where possible, anticipate individual guest needs
• Ensure the safety and comfort of guests; handle any requests for service in a courteous and efficient fashion
- People Management & Team Development
• Direct day-to-day engineering requirements, plan and assign work, and establish performance and development goals for team members
• Provide mentoring, coaching, and regular feedback to help manage conflict and improve team member performance
• Educate and train all team members in compliance with governmental and safety regulations
• Ensure staff is properly trained on quality and service standards; provide them with the necessary tools and equipment
• Recruit, select, and develop a motivated, well-qualified maintenance team
• Conduct probationary and formal performance appraisals in line with company guidelines
• Regularly communicate with staff to maintain good relations
• Act as a coach and mentor to the team to ensure high engagement levels, people development, and strong associate retention to strengthen company culture
- Quality Assurance & Compliance
• Contribute to a high standard of quality control by actively participating in the hotel's Quality Assurance Program
• Ensure the quality of all work completed by both employees and external contracted staff adheres to the standards of good engineering practice
• Ensure InterContinental/Group standards and requirements are effectively met for each project undertaken
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment logs, and compliance documentation
• Ensure all building codes and relevant ordinance requirements are met
- Qualifications & Requirements
√Experience
• Some college or advanced vocational training plus 6+ years of experience in general building maintenance and/or construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum of 2 years at Chief Engineer or above position
• Hotel experience is preferred
• Experience at a senior managerial level within a large luxury hotel or hospitality environment
√Technical Expertise
• Specialized expertise in one or more of the following: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry fields
• Strong technical knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and building maintenance systems
• Level 3 EPA Certification, HVAC and refrigeration certificate, licensed plumber and/or journeyman status for electrician and carpenter may be required
• Professional certification and license as required by law
• IOSH, Legionella, and statutory compliance certifications are advantageous
